I’m a tax law professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and founder and director of the Canadian Centre for Tax Policy/Centre canadien de politique fiscal, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing non-partisan public advocacy in the area of tax law and policy.
My research and teaching is socio-legal and international in focus. I care about how societies are differently impacted by tax rules and norms designed by states and international institutions, and I have a related interest in how technology divides societies even as it brings us together. Links to all my online publications are on my CV.
While much of my scholarship is in writings published in legal periodicals and books, I am also committed to mobilizing knowledge including developing public awareness and appreciation for tax law, and to do so using non-traditional media including art, infographics, and music in cooperation with students, alumni, and friends.
In 2023, a group of talented students formed the Tiny Tax Band to write, perform, and post tax-themed parodies of core tax concepts. You can find the Tiny Tax Band on Spotify, LinkedIn, Instagram & TikTok. And here’s a McGill reporter article about the band.
This year, a group of talented students is contributing to a year-long project designed to bring tax law to the public eye by delivering a daily dose of income tax law with art, on Instagram. Come follow along with us and gain a broad overview of Canada’s voluminous federal tax law.
Find tutorials, presentations, lectures and more, including tips for writing good papers in law school, formatting using styles, and diagramming structures on my Youtube channel.
